Will Your Next Next-gen Console Run on Holograms?

G.E. has recently announced laboratory success in holographic storage discs that could hold ~500 GB. See http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/27/technology/business-computing/27disk.html?_r=2.

It’ll be a good three years or so until the technology is commercially available, and then probably only to high-end consumers like movie studios and medical imaging facilities. Those places eat up storage.

But could you imagine the Playstation 4 built around holographic storage? Games could have even more cut scenes! They could last for years!

I’m not sure how movies will be affected. I mean, I can barely tell the difference between Blu-ray and good DVD. How much better resolution will we be able to see? But then, by the time the holodiscs are available for home distribution, I could probably afford a new 100’’ TV the way the prices have been dropping and the tech has been improving.

Note: Commenter is allowed to use '@User+:' to automatically notify previous commenter of a reply. For example, if ABC is one of the commenters to this post, then typing "@ABC: Hey ABC, you don't know what you're talking about." (excluding quotes, of course) will automatically send your comment to ABC. Use '@all:' to notify all previous commenters. Be sure that the value of User exactly matches with commenter's name (case sensitive). This is the only way to get your comments emailed to a user. Otherwise, they just have to check back often. I'm working on finding a more automated way of doing this.
