Apparently Penguin books has gotten Eoin Colfer to write a sixth installment of the Hitchhiker’s series. I’m not sure how I feel about this, yet. Is this something Colfer polished up from Adams’ notes? Is it a wholly original work? Either way, should it not be laid to rest? On the other hand, this could be fun. I love the Hitchhiker’s universe. I love the characters. I was devastated when Adams killed everyone at the end of the fifth novel, the one I found most funny of all, which actually made me laugh out loud in places. I was so incensed, I actually wrote to Adams chastising him for killing them off, rather than leaving them alive in the limbo of the readers’ imaginations. I understand it was a reaction to crazy fans badgering him to write more, but still, it hurt me. Sad, I know, to get attached to characters in such a way, but I got into Hitchhikers in my teenage years and you know how OCD teens can get about the things they are interested in. We listened to the radio series over and over again, quoted the series and books, had discussions on the merits of the series and books. Then watched the tv series and did it all over. Teen sci-fi geeks, heh.
Anyway, I’ll probably pick up a copy and read the first chapter before I buy it. And I’ll probably buy it, if for no other reason than I like Colfer’s work and wouldn’t mind supporting him, if only a little.
